Usui Shiki Ryoho

Dr Mikao Usui
Mikao Usui was born in 1865 in a village called 'Taniai Mora' in Japan. His family were wealthy enough to provide a good education for him and he studied from an early age at a Tendai Buddhist Monastery school.
The traditional story of how Reiki came to be has been passed down verbally throughout the years. It is said that when Usui was at a Zen Monastery he became enlightened with the principles and practice of Reiki. During a 21 day fast the Abbot had advised Usui to meditate to find answers to his questions and it was upon Mount Kurama that Usui gained spiritual empowerment and acquired a deep understanding of Reiki.
It is said that Mikao Usui spent many years treating people in japan with Reiki before passing on his knowledge and teachings to Naval Commander; Dr Chujiro Hayashi (1879-1940) who was said to have opened up a Reiki Clinic after Usui's death in 1926. It was here at this clinic that a young lady from Hawaii came to be treated for a serious illness and was so impressed with her results that she pleaded to be taught the Reiki healing system. Her name was Hawayo Takata (1900-1980) and she was eventually allowed to stay there, learning and practicing Reiki until she was able to return to Hawaii in 1937 to open up the first Reiki Clinic in the West. In 1938 Dr Hayashi was able to pass on the final level of Reiki Teachings, so that Hawayo Takata could teach others to heal with Reiki.
Mrs Takata relays that during Word War ll, Dr Hayashi and all of his Reiki students in Japan, were killed, leaving her as the only Reiki teacher alive. Hawayo Takata continued work at her Reiki Clinic in Hawaii and traveled throughout the US and Canada to treat with and teach Reiki. During the 1970's she imparted the final knowledge and teachings of Reiki to a total of ten Reiki students, allowing them to become Reiki Masters by the time of her death in 1980. It is through these Reiki Masters that Reiki has spread so widely throughout the Western World.
