Throat Chakra
The throat chakra is located at the base of your throat where there is a small indentation and is associated with the colour, blue. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is; Vishuddha, pronounced 'vish-oo-dah'. This chakra represents communication on all levels, the ability to express yourself clearly and calmly. The throat chakra allows you to express your own truth, it also represents ones discipline, creativity and clarity.
Each chakra is linked with parts of your physical body, the throat chakra represents; the throat, jaw, teeth, mouth, ears, nose, metabolism, thyroid gland, shoulders, arms and neck.
If your throat chakra is functioning well you are likely to be a clear communicator without being threatening, you trust your inner guidance and are quite likely to be a very good speaker. When this chakra is in balance your words will carry truth and clarity, you will not have any fear around expressing yourself and you will speak your inner truth, to yourself and to others. Others may describe you as a good listener or advisory, you will be creative as a means of expressing yourself. The throat chakra is linked to your sense of timing and as a result you may be an accomplished musician or singer. You will create easily; dance, art, drama, poetry, writing.
A mild imbalance in this chakra could show its self as the person who is too afraid to speak up, worrying that they are not good enough or interesting enough, or it could show as the person who seemingly talks over everyone and appears to 'like the sound of their own voice'.
When an imbalance occurs it can either manifest as too much emphasis on a chakra or too little emphasis on a chakra. In this case, if there is too much emphasis on the throat chakra you may be that person who talks 'too much', you are unable to hold back and probably interrupt people before they have finished speaking. You will not be a very good listener and quite likely enjoy gossiping about others. You may have a particularly grating, loud or harsh voice. On the other hand, if there is too little emphasis on this chakra you may find that you are unable to express your needs, resulting in manipulation of others and situations in order to have your needs met. Your voice may appear overly quiet or thin, you will prefer to keep quiet in situations that may require you to speak up. Others may perceive you as timid or shy and you will hold fear around expressing yourself.
A major imbalance may show its self as a person with uncontrollable rage. The throat chakra is where we store and process anger, a person who consistently stops themselves from expressing their needs may suffer with bursts of rage, either physically or verbally. Major imbalances can also show themselves in the physical body as ailments, such as; tonsillitis, laryngitis or thyroid problems.
Chakras can go in and out of balance as you go through your life, some imbalances are caused by physical injury and others by emotional trauma and it is not uncommon for a blockage or imbalance to stem from childhood. In the cases of a major imbalance it is advised that the person should seek help in the form of counselling or from a Doctor.
Here are a few things you can do to help balance your throat chakra yourself;
- Spend some time around the colour blue; lay under the blue sky and feel that the blue is flowing through you.
- Bring the colour blue into your life.
- Take singing lessons or join a choir.
- Take time to express yourself; if you feel unable to speak face to face with someone then try writing your feelings down. The important part is acknowledging your feelings.
- Spend a day telling the truth in every single situation you find yourself in.
- Buy a note book and write down your feelings/emotions every day.
- Learn to be comfortable with silence; start by sitting in silence for ten minutes and gradually increase the time. This may lead to an interest in meditation.
- Have a regular neck and shoulder massage to loosen up tight muscles here.
- Find a local inner-child work shop and enroll.
