Sacral Chakra
The sacral chakra is located low in the abdomen, just above the pubic bone and is associated with the colour, orange. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is; Svadisthana, pronounced 'svad-is-tarn-uh'. This chakra represents how you relate to the world and the people in it, your sexuality and finding what brings you pleasure in life.
Each chakra is linked with parts of your physical body, the sacral chakra represents; the sex organs and reproductive system, bladder, kidneys, appendix, pelvis, prostate, lower digestive system, lower vertebrae and lymphatic system.
If your sacral chakra is functioning well you will enjoy being with people and sharing with them. You will be able to participate in meaningful relationships and connect with people deeply and intimately. Others may describe you as being warm and friendly. You will not fear commitment and you'll be able to feel empathy and compassion towards others. Your life will be vibrant and meaningful to you and you will comfortably seek pleasure in all that you do.
A mild imbalance in the sacral chakra could leave you feeling insecure, bringing with it feelings of jealousy and issues with intimacy and commitment. With this, pleasure seeking may be overemphasised or denied completely. Sex can become just the act of having sex rather than love making. You may lack the ability to connect on a deeper, more loving level and as such, sex becomes a more shallow experience. Relationships can tend toward being superficial and you may use people for your own, likely self-centered, needs.
When an imbalance occurs it can either manifest as too much emphasis on a chakra or too little emphasis on a chakra. In this case, if there is too much emphasis on the sacral chakra you will struggle to find any satisfaction with pleasure. You will constantly seek the next thrill for a hit of adrenaline and may become addicted to a certain activity, habit or person. All addictions are related back to an imbalance to the sacral chakra. Your emotions are strongly charged and you can get attached to people easily, to the point of obsession. On the other hand, if there is too little emphasis on this chakra you may find that your life lacks fun and excitement, you find socialising difficult so you withdraw, you may be shy, timid or overly sensitive and will likely experience feelings of low self-worth and guilt.
A major imbalance in this chakra will, at the extreme, manifest it's self as sexual perversions and sexual abuse. A person may become manipulative and emotionally explosive. Physical violence and obsession with sex are common, as well as serious addiction issues.
Chakras can go in and out of balance as you go through your life, some imbalances are caused by physical injury and others by emotional trauma and it is not uncommon for a blockage or imbalance to stem from childhood. In the case of the sacral chakra, sexual abuse (given or received) will likely cause an imbalance. In the cases of a major imbalance it is advised that the person should seek help in the form of counselling, therapy or seeking assistance from a Doctor.
Here are a few things you can do to help balance your sacral chakra yourself;
- Spend some time near to the water.
- Bring the colour orange into your life.
- Partake in a pleasurable activity and be 100% aware during your chosen activity, so that you may fully experience the pleasure of what you are doing.
- Dance/swim or take dance/swimming lessons.
- Run a warm bath to relax in, put a few drops of Essential Oil into the water. (orange, rosemary, tangerine or juniper).
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day (at least 6 glasses).
- Eat orange coloured fruits and vegetables.
- Book yourself a series of massages.
- Be creative; create something (a painting, poem, cake, model) and then give it away.
