Heart Chakra
The heart chakra is located at the breastbone, in the middle of the chest and is associated with the colour green. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is; Anahata, pronounced 'anna-hatta'. This chakra represents love, compassion, feelings of empathy. It is linked with kindness and balance, the ability to find unity and also with infinity.
Each chakra is linked with parts of your physical body, the heart chakra represents; the immune system, the heart, lungs and bronchial tubes, circulatory system, shoulders, arms, hands, diaphragm, ribs, upper back, breasts and thymus gland.
If your heart chakra is functioning well you will accept yourself completely, on a very deep level, and will therefore be able to accept others for who they are without judgement. You will not be afraid to be yourself and speak or think your own truth because you will not fear the judgement of others, you will accept other peoples judgement for what it is; most often their own imbalance. Your heart will be open to love and accept love, there are many kinds of love and you will be able to display unconditional love towards another. Others may describe you as being very warm and caring, compassionate and empathetic.
A mild imbalance in the heart chakra may show its self as the person who is always caring for other people but not managing to show the same level of care towards themselves. It could also show as the person who doesn't seem to care about other people's plights, this person may seemingly be too concerned with their own problems to empathise with anyone else.
When an imbalance occurs it can either manifest as too much emphasis on a chakra or too little emphasis on a chakra. In this case, if there is too much emphasis on the heart chakra, the heart chakra will be too open. This may find a person being overly concerned with the needs of others and neglecting their own needs. This person is likely to have excess emotion and will manipulate others. They may say things like 'if you loved me, you wouldn't do that' or 'if you do........I won't love you anymore'. On the other hand, if there is too little emphasis on this chakra you may find that the heart chakra is too closed. This will create a lot of fears; fear of rejection, of getting hurt, moving on, making decisions. This person may become wrapped up in themselves and appear to have hardened their hearts to others, being unable to show compassion or empathy.
A major imbalance can leave a person feeling completely unloved or unlovable causing a series of problems with knock-on effects, which may require a form of counselling. Physical problems linked with the heart chakra can also occur, such as; heart attack, a stroke, circulatory problems, heart disease.
Chakras can go in and out of balance as you go through your life, some imbalances are caused by physical injury and others by emotional trauma and it is not uncommon for a blockage or imbalance to stem from childhood. In the cases of a major imbalance it is advised that the person should seek help in the form of counselling or from a Doctor.
Here are a few things you can do to help balance your heart chakra yourself;
- Forgive yourself for anything you judge yourself as being guilty of.
- Set aside time regularly for yourself, treat yourself. Do something nice for yourself as though you were planning a treat for a good friend.
- spend time around children, babies or young people.
- volunteer at a local hospice or homeless shelter.
- Bring the colour green into your life.
- Forgive anyone who you might have judged as being guilty of something (this can be quite difficult in some cases so it won't always happen immediately).
- Have some acupuncture to balance your heart meridian.
- Take up jogging, dancing, swimming or the like, anything to get you puffed out.
- Practice following your heart!
