Frequently Asked Questions
What is Reiki?
Pronounced ‘ray-key’; Reiki is a Japanese concept of natural healing. The word Reiki is most accurately translated to English as ‘Life-force Energy’ and it is believed that the universe and all that is around us has this life-force energy. Reiki is perceived to be a positive energy and therefore it can be used to aid the body with its own natural healing process.
How does Reiki work?
A Reiki practitioner will have undergone specific training and attunement process, which allows the Reiki practitioner to act as a channel for the Reiki. By letting Reiki flow, the practitioner can then direct the flow of energy to another person. As the Reiki energy is absorbed by the other person their body’s natural relaxation response is triggered, allowing their body and mind to deeply relax, which in turn allows the body to repair its self on a physical and emotional level.
Is Reiki a religion?
No, Reiki is not a religion. Reiki will work for you regardless of your religion or beliefs.
What will happen during a treatment?
During a typical Reiki treatment you will have a chance to speak with your practitioner before the treatment starts; at this point you can ask questions and discuss a treatment plan. You will lie on massage table, usually on your back but you can also lie on your font or side, you will remain fully clothed and often people will choose to be covered by a blanket. Some treatments may also be given in a seated position.
Once you are comfortable your practitioner will normally ask you to close your eyes and relax whilst they take a moment to prepare for the treatment.
During the treatment your Reiki practitioner will place their hands at various points just above your body and also directly onto your body, quite often working from the head down. The hand positions are static and do not involve any massage techniques, the amount of pressure applied is very gentle and non-invasive. (please note; your reiki practitioner may apply gentle pressure to the occipital ridge whilst treating the back of the head. If you are uncomfortable with this please let your practitioner know.)
You will find that you fall into a deeply relaxed state, you may be aware of the practitioner moving around and placing their hands or you may find that you fall asleep throughout the treatment. Some people report a feeling of deep warmth from the hands of the practitioner and others find that they can feel a cool or tingling sensation, like a breeze over the skin. Every person is different and has an experience unique to them. Some people aren't aware of feeling anything, which can also be completely normal.
What is the aim of the treatment?
Generally your practitioner will be treating all areas of your body, which covers the main organs, muscles, skeletal system, the lymphatic system, and endocrine system. Your practitioner will also be treating your Chakras, of which there are seven main Chakra’s; each of which correlate to a physical area of your body. (Chakra is a Sanskrit word for disk or wheel; it is believed that the body has various energy wheels, each relating to a different area of the body and when they become unbalanced they have an effect on our bodies, either physically or emotionally.)
The aim for the practitioner is to fully treat your whole body, paying attention to areas that draw more Reiki. During the treatment your Reiki practitioner will be treating you on a physical level, e.g. for aches and pains, an emotional level, e.g. for stress or grief and an energetic level, e.g. balancing your meridians and Chakras.
How long will my treatment last?
Most commonly a treatment will last around an hour and a half in length; with time for discussion before and after your treatment and also time for a short card reading or rune cast if you wish. It is possible to discuss your needs with your practitioner at the time of booking your appointment, the option of a shorter treatment is also possible. Please see the Reiki Treatment list, which includes prices.
