Base Chakra
The base chakra is located at the base of the spine/perineum and is associated with the colour, red. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is; Muladhara, pronounced 'mool-uh-dah-ruh'. This chakra represents your survival instinct and being grounded in your physical body, it also represents your sense of security and ability to accept.
Each chakra is linked with parts of your physical body, the base chakra represents; the feet and legs, anus, bowels, perineum, colon, bladder, lower back and hips, pelvis, intestine, skin and skeletal system.
If your base chakra is functioning well you will feel strong and stable, yet flexible enough to deal with and accept change. Others may describe you as being well 'grounded' and you will normally be able to keep on top of chores and managing money. Generally you will feel safe and secure and your life brings you an inner contentment. You respect the needs of your body and eat a balanced diet, you will stretch and exercise your body without becoming fanatical about diet or exercise.
A mild imbalance in the base chakra can leave you feeling fearful, anxious and insecure. It becomes difficult to manage your work load and pay bills on time. You can often feel a little out of control of the events in your life, as if you're the observer and you may struggle to adapt to and accept change. You may find that your diet is unbalanced and you eat more than you usually would, causing a feeling of sluggishness or tiredness.
When an imbalance occurs it can either manifest as too much emphasis on a chakra or too little emphasis on a chakra. In this case, if there is too much emphasis on the base chakra you may turn into the classic workaholic who comes across as being self-centred and demanding, putting too much focus onto money and material items. On the other hand, if there is too little emphasis on this chakra you may find that you are unable to cope with the daily demands of life and have a general feeling of chaos and disorganisation rather than of order in your life.
A major imbalance may show its self as a person who is a bully to the extent of physical abuse, it may show its self as sexual sadism or as an eating disorder, such as anorexia nervosa or obesity. Eating is linked to our instinct to survive, if we are eating too much it is because we are trying to ground ourselves and if we are eating too little it is because we are avoiding being grounded.
Chakras can go in and out of balance as you go through your life, some imbalances are caused by physical injury and others by emotional trauma and it is not uncommon for a blockage or imbalance to stem from childhood. In the cases of a major imbalance it is advised that the person should seek help in the form of counselling, therapy or from a Doctor.
Here are a few things you can do to help balance your base chakra yourself;
- Bring the colour red into your life.
- Walk in nature.
- Put a handful of salt into your bath.
- Plant and grow your own vegetables, or complete any form of gardening activity to help you reconnect with the earth.
- Walk barefoot on the earth or go for a paddle in the sea.
- Bring flexibility to your body by participating in yoga, dance, swimming, Pilates, gymnastics or similar.
- Bring a sense of order to your life by tidying and de-cluttering your living space.
- Maintain a balanced and healthy diet. Everything in moderation.
- Spend time around trees, feel their deep connection with the earth.....you can even hug one!
